One of the beautiful realities of missionary life is discovering how even the simplest initiatives can become powerful instruments of evangelisation and service. Here in the Prelature of Santiago Apóstol de Huancané, one such initiative has been the restoration of our community radio station.
When I first arrived in Huancané, I came across an abandoned radio station hidden away in a small room. The equipment was no longer functioning and broadcasting had ceased many years before. Yet it quickly became clear that this was not simply old machinery, but a valuable opportunity to reconnect with our people, especially those living in the rural communities scattered throughout our Prelature.
With the support of many generous benefactors, we were able to restore the station and bring it back to life. Today, this radio service once again reaches homes, farms, and villages across the region, becoming an important means of communication, education, and evangelisation.
The majority of our people are farmers and shepherds. Many spend long hours working in the fields, often accompanied only by a small radio. Through this simple medium, they remain connected to the wider community and receive information that is important for their daily lives.
Our radio station seeks to do much more than provide news and local information. Through its broadcasts, families are invited to pray the Rosary together, participate in the daily celebration of Holy Mass, listen to catechetical programmes, and follow discussions that promote human development, Christian formation, and hope. In this way, the radio becomes an extension of our pastoral mission, reaching people wherever they may be.
What makes this project particularly meaningful is that it exists solely for the good of the community. It carries no commercial advertising and serves no political interests. Its purpose is simply to accompany our people and to bring the light of the Gospel into their daily lives.
For this reason, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have supported this initiative. Without the generosity of our benefactors and friends, this project would not have been possible. Through your help, the Word of God, education, and hope continue to reach many families, especially those who are poor, isolated, or facing difficult circumstances.
This radio station is a reminder that mission is not only about travelling great distances. It is about finding creative ways to be close to people, to listen to them, and to walk alongside them in their joys and struggles. Every broadcast is an opportunity to remind someone that they are loved by God and that they are not alone.
On behalf of the clergy, religious, and faithful of the Prelature of Santiago Apóstol de Huancané, I thank you for your continued support and prayers. Together, we continue to build a Church that reaches out, accompanies, and brings hope to those who need it most.
